Ask any good conference organiser what they want in a destination and they'll likely reply: easy access, good weather, great facilities and somewhere, in plain language, that just works.

Malta ticks all the boxes: English speaking, easy to reach (three hours from most of the UK) and with a great year-round climate (an average low of only 13C in January) plus some top class meeting venues and hotels.

Getting to the island presents no difficulties wherever you are. Malta is well served from across the UK and Ireland in terms of direct flights with 17 departure points in summer, including Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool, Dublin and Bournemouth. Winter flights see around a dozen UK airports offering the route and access from across Europe is similarly very good, so if your delegates are coming from across the UK or the continent, flights are cheap and easy.

Malta's capital Valletta is on a roll after being chosen as 2018 European Capital of Culture, and it is one city that your delegates will thank you for sending them to, not least because the transfer time from the airport is only 15-20 minutes. The ancient capital is a wonderful; contrast to the island's state of the art hotels and al fresco drink receptions are possible pretty much year-round. At sunset, you have a backdrop of Baroque limestone buildings that glow obligingly.

The compactness of the city (it covers just a third of a square mile) means that it is easy to house delegates in several different hotels if your event is a large gathering. Malta's 15 five-star properties are often within walking distance of each other and the island's MICE experts say it is possible to accommodate up to 3,000 delegates in neighbouring hotels, particularly the cluster around St Julian's bay, just outside the old city.

Between them, these 15 properties have more than 5,500 beds and boast names including Hilton, Radisson Blu, InterContinental, Le Meridien, Westing, and Malta's own Corinthia Hotels International.

The most important convention hotel is the InterContinental at St. George's Bay, whose meeting rooms can accommodate 1,700 and which has 451 rooms. An extension, adding two more floors, is due to open in early 2017. Another large property, The Hilton at St Julian's Bay, can accommodate up to 1,300 delegates. It has 404 rooms and a refurbishment was completed in April. Nearer to Valletta itself, the Excelsior boasts 428 rooms and meeting space for 850 attendees.

If your event is more boutique, the  consider Malta's smaller neighbour Gozo, where the Kempinski offers 122 rooms and space for 300 to meet. Gozo will focus the mind, as it offers peace and quiet, with none of the distractions of Valetta.

Back on Malta, one property that is exciting the incentive market is The Phoenicia, and Art Deco gem that is a member of Leading Hotels of the World which re-opens in January following refurbishment. Work will see it become a five-star deluxe property with 128 rooms and eight suites.

There is more to come. "There is a lot of refurbishment going on in preparation for 2018 and the city itself is being refurbished, " said Nicolas Sancho, Malta Tourist Office's UK and Ireland MICE manager, who added that: "Pretty much every month a new boutique hotel opens".

It is exciting times for Malta, so if you want to capture the imagination of your employees, it's one to put high on the list.
